Thesis work of PhD in Mechanical Engineering

1. Opening report

(1) Topic Selection: The research topic of the thesis should be related to the frontier research or major technical issues of the specialty, encouraging the work of emerging interdisciplinary subjects, but meeting the requirements of frontier and creativity.

(2) Necessary conditions for the opening of the topic: to complete the credits for degree courses stipulated in the training plan and submit 2-3 papers that the report of read the special literature or the summary of the symposium.

(3) Requirements for the opening report: The opening report with more than 8,000 words shall be completed within one year (3-year doctoral students) or two years (postgraduate and doctoral students after master's admission and on-the-job doctoral students), including literature review, significance of topic selection, research content, difficulties and characteristics, expected results and possible innovations, etc. No less than 50 references shall be cited.

(4) Review of the opening report: organize not less than 7 relevant teachers with senior professional titles (not less than 4 professors) to listen to the opening report and make comments. The opening can only be started after the review is passed. Those who do not pass the review need to re-open the topic. If there are significant changes in the research content of the thesis after the topic selection, a re-opening report should be made.

2. Stage report

The paper stage report is conducted in the third semester of the second academic year or the first semester of the third academic year. Doctoral students should write a stage report of about 2000 words on the progress and achievements of their papers. It also reports and reviews publicly within the scope of secondary disciplines. There are not less than 5 professors and associate professors participating in the project. Interdisciplinary subjects are invited to participate by professors and associate professors of corresponding disciplines. The focus is on reviewing the progress of papers, the overall framework of papers, the training of scientific spirit and whether there are any innovations. Those who fail to pass the review shall submit detailed suggestions for revision, which may be reviewed once after half a year, and those who fail to pass the review shall be dealt with in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Graduate School.

3. Thesis defense

(1) Requirements for quantitative indicators of scientific research results

When applying for a degree, a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering must meet the basic requirements of the “Quantitative Indicators for Scientific Research Achievements awarded by the Graduate Degree of Shanghai University” and publish at least 2 SCI papers related to the dissertation (the applicant is the first author or ranked first except the applicant's mentor, and the first signatory is Shanghai University.).

(2) Pre-answer requirements

The pre-answer of the dissertation should be held three months before the formal defense. A pre-answered passer can make a formal reply.

(3) Peer review and defense requirements

Before the defense, it is necessary to get 5-7 peer experts (the number of doctors is more than 50%, and the number of off-campus experts is more than 2/3). Those who disagree with no more than one reply may organize the reply. The Responding Committee is composed of 5-7 experts from the regular and higher vocational colleges, with less than 50% of the reviewers and more than 50% of the experts from other units.

If there are more than two comments that do not agree with the reply or fail to pass the reply, it shall be handled according to the regulations of the graduate school.

Thesis of Master in Instrumentation Science and Technology Engineering

1. Kickoff report. Graduate students can apply for research projects after finishing required credits. The thesis project is the most important measure that helps the students to apply foundational theories and knowledge to solving problems in research work, to train abilities of innovation. Before the fourth semester, the student should have completed the kickoff report, made a decision on the research project and writing plan. The project should have the meaning either of scientific value, or of solving technological problems arising in the industry. The kickoff report should be in no less than 3000 words, with a bibliographic list consisting of no less than 30 reference articles. No less than 3 professors or associated professors are necessary for the assessment of the kickoff report. The student is required to offer his explanations with regard to the contents, significance and value of the project, the research plan for the proposed solution to the problem, and the progress for the research. The assessing professors should offer their comments on the explanation and suggestions for the revision in order to ensure the quality of the dissertation.

2. Mid-term Report. The student is required to make an extensive literature survey in research field under the direction of the supervisors, to master the frontier of discipline or the dynamic of research, to give at least two oral reports on the seminars of their discipline, and to participate in the professional academic seminars reporting and discussing the project to obtain guidance and help. The student must submit a mid-term report with about 1000 words summarizing the research progress half year later after finishing the kickoff report.

3. Defense of Thesis.

(1) Requirements for Quantitative Indicators of Scientific Research Achievements

When applying for a master's degree, at least one SCI or EI paper related to the subject should be published (the student must be the first author or the second only when the supervisor is the first, The first signatory of all papers is Shanghai University). Among them, SCI and EI source journals need to provide employment notice or retrieval certificate, while conference papers need to provide retrieval certificate.

(2) Pre-defense, Peer Review and Defense Requirements

Before the formal defense of a dissertation, a preliminary defense must be conducted. After the preliminary defense is passed, the dissertation shall be reviewed and defended in accordance with the relevant provisions of the State Academic Degrees Regulations.

The graduate students who joined united training with Chinese Academy of Sciences should observe the implementation of the agreement, and the terms of the agreement which are not explicitly observed should be performed in accordance with the cultivation requirements of Shanghai University.

① Students participate in engineering design and application, product development, scientific research, design and other aspects of the work, write technical reports, and by the internship unit or application unit issued a certificate;

② Having participated in a scientific research project that has been appraised and accepted by the competent government department or bureau-level project evaluation organization (ranking requirements: except teachers and enterprise personnel, master students are ranked in the top 2);

③ Has won 1 science and technology progress award (within the quota) issued or recognized by the government department;

④ Publicly publish a core journal paper signed by the first author except the tutor;

⑤ Obtained a certificate of acceptance of an application for a patent for invention related to the topic selection of the dissertation (ranking requirement: master students rank first except tutors and joint tutors of enterprises).

5. Review and Defense: After the students have completed their dissertation and approved by the tutor, the tutor's discipline will organize their peers in and out of the school to review the quality of the dissertation. After passing the review, the tutor will be responsible for organizing the defense. The dissertation should be reviewed by 2 experts with senior professional titles, and the defense committee should be composed of 3 or 5 experts with senior professional titles. The reviewer and the defense committee shall have experts from off-campus industrial and mining enterprises or engineering departments.
